I don’t know if anyone else feels like this, but I’d guess there are a few of you out there. I’m the type of person who can spend an entire day researching and diving deep into a random topic, only to lose interest by the following weekend. Sound familiar?

Well, I’ve reached a crossroads, and this time, I’m putting a stake in the ground. The subject I’m claiming?

FinTech — also known as Financial Technology.

Neither finance nor technology were topics offered at my high school in Western North Carolina, where big tech companies and large financial institutions were scarce. However, I was always eager to understand the workings of the macro economy and keep up with the latest technology. Why? Early on, I realized that people who handle money—or control access to it—tend to make a lot of it. And technology? Well, it democratizes learning, innovation, and opportunity. With enough patience and persistence, anyone can create something remarkable.

The Power of Finance and Technology

If you can master both finance and technology, you can shape the world—or at least that’s how it seems to me. From the World Bank, Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan Chase,  and Deutsche Bank to tech giants like Oracle, Google, OpenAI, and Nvidia, the people at the intersection of these fields are the movers and shakers of our time.

Finance and technology have always been game-changers. The entrepreneur or engineer who holds the latest technology or secures the best financing often emerges as a leader. These two forces—money and technology—will always grant access to power and influence.

Finding My Seat at the Table

But how do I get a seat at this table?

Truth be told, I’m no natural at math, and I couldn’t stick to one subject long enough to feel like I learned anything in college. To be honest, sitting in front of a chalkboard for hours just wasn’t for me—I prefer the computer screen. I wasn’t the best student, but I love to learn. So now, I’m making my fresh start, and you can, too.
